Learning “nothing” from the Gospel of John

When Pastor Russ challenged us all to read through the gospel of John together over the last two weeks, he suggested that we read two chapters a day. Well I’ve already fallen behind on that, which is something that would’ve made me feel like a failure even ten months ago. But not today. Because what God is speaking to me through John is “nothing”.

John 3:7 – “… a person can not receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.”
John 5:30 – Jesus says “I can do nothing on my own.”
John 9:33 – The blind man who was healed and his life forever changed gave witness about Jesus to the Pharisees “if this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
Only when our strength is stripped, our strivings cease can we receive His. And that truth does set us free. He sets us free indeed.

Nothing in my hands I bring. Simply to thy cross I cling. And what a beautiful cross. That cross pries our hands right open to our nothing to receive His everything.
