Tell Yourself the Truth... Day Four

"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him."
                                                                                                                      Romans 8:14-17

Let me start with a confession… I have a hard time memorizing scripture.  Especially the references!  I am constantly saying in conversation “you know that one verse that says…  where is that from??"

Well, the passage above is one of the few that ran the gauntlet and made it through to my memory bank.  I struggle with fear sometimes, so that is how this verse made it on the short list for memorization (ah..  the few and the proud!).

One of the great things about memorizing scripture is that as you repeat the scripture over and over in your mind, you begin to really meditate on it, to truly “soak it in”.  The beauty of this verse is that it explains to us that the spirit of slavery is what causes us to fear…  But if we receive fully what is given to us in Jesus Christ- the "spirit of adoption as sons”- than we have no need to fall back into fear.  Because a son is secure in his house.  A son is secure in the love of his father.  A son need not be afraid, for the very reason that is outlined by the father character in the parable we’ve been studying every Sunday for the past three weeks; “Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours” (Luke 15:31).

If you have been “born again”…  Adopted into the family of God through faith in Jesus Christ, than you are no longer a slave to the devil…  You are no longer a son of Adam, and you are free indeed from the inheritance of Adam, which is death. Jesus inherited that death for you on the cross.

But, thank God, death couldn’t hold him down!  As the only begotten son of God, he stepped out of the empty tomb into the inheritance that ONLY Jesus has the right to claim: LIFE…  True life!

The truth I’d love for all of us who are believers in Jesus to carry with us into the world today is this…  Through the miracle of the Gospel, you have been adopted out of the family of Adam, and into the family of God, and therefore your inheritance has changed.  You now are a co-heir with Christ of the life that was his by right!  So we don’t need to fear! We are secure…  Even in suffering, as the last verse of this passage reminds us, we need not be afraid!  We can endure that suffering, because what follows is glory…

Walk today in the humble freedom that comes from knowing that, because of Jesus, you have been brought into the family… Your place is secure.  That is good news in an insecure world…  Good news indeed

I’m praying for you today!
