The Road to Salone
by Olivia Abernathy
Last August, City was able to send out its first international missionaries, Charles and Ally Currie, to live and work in Sierra Leone.
Having such a dear brother and sister across the world has beautifully broadened our concept of the "multi-ethnic family of faith on mission with King Jesus" that we envision. As our sister Kelsey put it in a blog post about her trip to Salone, “God’s family is one without borders. So as we work to build a multi-ethnic family of faith on mission with King Jesus it's important to remember that our work may start in Jackson, TN, but it goes way beyond these Jackson borders; it crosses oceans and reaches down even into Sierra Leone.”
On July 14th, ten of our City folks will board a plane to go and meet this family across the world.
We are anxious and excited to travel to Salone and to connect with the Curries and the people there. As you can imagine, there are a lot of logistics that go into making an international mission trip successful. We want to give you an inside look at what this trip will be like and how you can participate from Jackson.
What will we be doing?
Ally and Charles have been working to establish a transitional home called the Roots House for the young adults who are aging out of living at The Covering, the 24/7 care facility for orphaned children in Sierra Leone. In early August, Ally and Charles will welcome 6 teenagers into this new home. This is a major undertaking, and one with the Lord’s handprints all over it! Our team will have the opportunity to assist in getting the Roots House up and running.
You will see on the list of team members below that we have some pretty stellar musicians going on the trip. Several members of City Fellowship’s worship team will be able to exchange songs with the choir at The Covering and even perform a concert together. We are asking the Lord to teach us more and more of how worship transcends language and culture. We expect it to be a powerful, tiny glimpse into the beauty that surely awaits us in heaven even as we pursue it here on earth.
Along with these tasks, our team will be spending time at The Covering connecting with the children and staff there, encouraging and supporting the Curries, and getting our hands dirty with whatever else the Lord has for us in Salone!
How can you participate?
1. Donate supplies
Each of the travelers will take two 50lb suitcases filled with supplies for The Covering, The Roots House, and for the Curries. Ally has put together an Amazon wishlist of all the things they need to make the Roots House a comfortable place to live. If you are interested in helping provide supplies:
- Check out the Amazon Wishlist
- Select your item(s) for purchase
- Ship directly to 205 Normandy Place Jackson, TN 38305, or drop off at the Info Desk at church on Sunday
That’s all! Your order will be packed in our luggage and delivered to the Roots House! You can be on mission with us from your couch, on your smart phone!
2. Donate movies and Bibles
Ally is collecting movies for the younger and older kids at the center. If you'd like to donate any movies you can ship them to the address above or bring them to the Info Desk on Sunday.
She and Charles are also hoping to give personalized NLT Bibles to the kids moving into the Roots House. If you would like to purchase a Bible please contact Melanie Taylor at firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm the name of your kid.
3. Donate money
If you'd rather not purchase supplies from Amazon, but would like to contribute money for supplies, you can give directly to Angie Roberts through the Cash App or bring cash or check to the Info Desk.
4. Pray for our team, the Curries, and Sierra Leone
- Be praying specifically for me (Olivia Abernathy), Ky Bailey, Leanna Cargile, Mabry Gardner, Pastor Russ Pflasterer, Nar'Asha Randall, Angie Roberts, Pastor Chris Taylor, Ebony Taylor, and Melanie Taylor
- Pray that we'd be able to encourage the Curries through our presence (and supplies!)
- Pray that the Lord would continue to bless the work of believers in Sierra Leone
